This was my final for my Scenography class.
This is a 1/4" scale model of Ohio University's Forum Theater for a theoretical production of Shakespeare's "Richard III."
This was led by one of the MA directors also in the class who decided to set this production of "Richard III" in a 1980s public high school during Homecoming Week. To keep things simple, and also from the guidance of the director, the entire design was based on a school hallway combined with a school multipurpose room.
And it would also have a full female cast.
Inspired by the original setting of the play, 1500s London, I wanted the colors and textures to reflect this high school, which brought me to red, blue, and brown tile. They were chosen to reflect the British flag and to mirror the bricks in a castle. The tiles, as you can see in my research, were also popular in 1980s high schools.
To make the linoleum floor more interesting, I put Richard III's emblem, the boar, in the center of the stage posing as the school mascot.
The Homecoming Dance replaces the battle scene, but I wanted to keep it simple enough that most of it could be put up by cast members. I used a basic 80s color pallet to contrast the colors of the high school and put it on streamers and balloons so that most of it could be carried onstage by actors.
The lockers and figures were free files I found online and scaled for my purposes.
